Safe Sharps

Safe Sharps

The aim of the Safe Sharps’ project is to assist sharps' users to easily find approved sharps' disposal locations so that used sharps can be properly and safely disposed of.

The website www.safesharps.org.au was launched by the NSW Minister for Health, Hon Jillian Skinner MP on 13 July 2011 at Parliament House in Sydney.

Safe Sharps has been developed by REROC and funded by through the Community Sharps Management Grants program which is an initiative of the NSW Department of Health and Local Government NSW.

The website is an interactive and dynamic site that allows sharps' users to identify locations where used sharps can be disposed of appropriately. The website is linked to Google maps allowing users to easily plot locations. The information can also be accessed via iPhone™ and iPad™ and mobile web. The iPhone™ and iPad™ versions can be downloaded from the   versions ver verasdfion  App Store

The REROC Waste Forum is the manager of the Safe Sharps' Project. The Forum has been working closely with the Australian Diabetes Council to identify locations that are safe sharps' disposal sites; this includes pharmacies, hospitals, community health and public facility locations.

Currently there are over 1,600 safe sharps locations held on the site and it is expected that this will continue grow as more information is made available by councils, providers and consumers. The site facilitates growth as it allows consumers to upload information on safe sharps locations via their smart phone, iPad or through the website. It also allows consumers to report information that is inaccurate. Information provided by consumers is validated by REROC prior to being uploaded to the site.

Safe Sharps Stage 2 was announced as the Division and overall winner of the Community Sharps Management Award at the 2013 Local Government Excellence in the Environment Awards held in Sydney on 3 December 2013. REROC also won this same award in 2011 for the Safe Sharps project. Further information on the Awards can be found on the LGNSW website. Safe Sharps also received 2nd place at the Innovation in Waste Awards which were presented in Coffs Harbour at the Waste Conference on 2 May 2012.
